The Netherlands has moved up the Global Innovation Index (GII), going from #3 to #2 overtaking Sweden. The Global Innovation Index (GII) is created by Cornell University, INSEAD and the World Intellectual Property Organization. The GII ranks the innovation performance of 126 economies from around the world.

The GII is in it’s 11th edition this year which focused on the energy innovation landscape of the coming decade and possible breakthroughs that could be made in the areas of consumption, distribution, storage and energy production. To get the top ten countries are assessed on 80 indicators within 7 pillars. The pillars are:

  • Institutions
  • Human capital and research
  • Infrastructure
  • Market sophistication
  • Business sophistication
  • Knowledge and technology outputs
  • Creative outputs

Strengths highlight by the report for the Netherlands include scoring highly for business sophistication, knowledge and technology outputs and creative outputs.
